Get The 19 Brain Skills That Will Change Your Life

It was all so sudden. He had the barrel of a gun pressed into the side of my head. He made me lie face down on the floor of our master bedroom. He demanded to know when others in the household were due to be back. Frantically I raced in my mind to think of an answer, all the while only thinking of my 22-month-old son who was downstairs.

He methodically made me undress and tied me up with my own scarves. My hands were tied securely behind my back. A scarf was stuffed into my mouth as I breathed rapidly through my nose. My feet were also bound and tied securely as I lay on the floor.

After the various ways he raped me, he dragged me into the bathroom, left me on the floor bound, scared and still not believing this was happening.

Of course there is more to the story. I write a brief part of it here to invite you to ponder the effects to someone’s insides that might be happening when all this occurs. My brain literally went haywire, no joke. I was in acute Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) and had no idea I had been bruised and injured also on the inside.

In some ways I think our brains must be the epitome of God’s creation. God’s creation often needs to be redeemed. When something like what happened to me occurs, the brain literally goes haywire, scrambling to understand and adapt. Fight and flight neurons are firing away in all directions. Brain scan technology of PTSD can show us a picture of a brain in that kind of state. It looks like it’s on fire! The fire needs to be put out and healing needs to occur. When a brain is healed it’s calm and cool. A brain on fire does not allow a healthy functioning person to be who God created us to be.

In my book I describe my own personal journey toward healing, but so much more has happened since 2012 when it was published. One significant addition involves a healing resource I found, Life Model Works ( I started with Track I training in 2013. I have since completed Track III, and continue the training at home and with others. I wish I could adequately describe the amazing Intended Journey (vs. the Unintended Journey the rapist put me on). God has a different way in mind for all us and this source has been life-giving.

I have trained my brain in 19 key brain skills for healing and growth (and of course continue to so). One example that has changed me radically and continues to do so is what I call “my solved mystery” of finding JOY. What? What does the ‘Joy of the Lord mean? Well, Joy is the strength we need for growth and healing. Understanding, learning to practice and spreading joy is the first brain skill. And then, oh my, so much for you, me, and us.  I invite you to check it out.

Be blessed….you can find your joy strength too.
